This article talks about what genomics is, what is scope of genomics and what type of jobs are available in genomics.

What is genomics?

In simplest terms, the study of genomes is [a fully set of DNA in an organism is called a genome] is known as Genomics.

While in past some particular genes that caused inherited traits and genetic mutations may have been studied but today main focus is being given to genome. Study of genomics requires the scientist to do systematic analysis of hereditary material of different living organisms. It has given a new vision into the evolution, function and organization of whole genetic material. The comparisons of complete sequences of genes help scientists to get latest information on survival capabilities of almost similar creatures in totally different environment.

Scope of Genomics

Though genomics jobs are quite new in biology field, but the knowledge gained till date is so critical in solving mysteries related to living organisms. Genome scientists have excellent career stability and growth. Anyone who is interested in knowing the secrets of genetic traits, defects, or tendencies should consider a career in genomics.

Mere interest and aptitude for a particular subject is not sufficient for a candidate to settle himself in any field successfully. As a genomics scientist a person should be able to work as an independent or as a team member. As much of the work is based in data identification and analysis and then application of researched data is a team effort. Genomics scientist should be willing to accept and consider the points of view and ideas of other colleagues.

In next part we’ll find out a few more aspects of genomics as a career.
